In the 4th century jasper was used to bring rain. The name Jasper means "spotted or speckled stone," and is derived from the French word jaspre. The odem, the first stone on the High Priest's breastplate, was a red jasper, and the tarshish, the tenth stone, may have been a yellow jasper.  Green jasper was used to make bow drills in Mehrgarh (part of Pakistan) between 4th and 5th millennium BC.
