Natural stromatolite fossil for your gemstone collection. Stromatolites are the Earth's oldest of fossils. Stromatolites, also known as stromatoliths, are layered bio-chemical accretionary structures formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding, and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of microorganisms. Fossilized stromatolites provide ancient records of life on Earth from 3.7 billion years ago. Stromatolites were first discovered in Shark Bay, Australia in 1956. Most stromatolites grow in extremely salty lagoons or bays, in places like Australia, Brazil, Mexico and the Bahamas.
